Weekly Update

Math

We've completed Module 1 of our Math lessons, which included working with three and four digit numbers, as well as multiplication of 10s and 5s. We studied the multiplicative relationships for 10s and 5s with the concepts of halving and doubling. Students will be bringing home their post tests, which parents are asked to sign, and students are expected to return to school.

We now move into Module 2, where we will cover addition of 2 and 3 digit numbers, reading and measuring time, and exploring 2 dimensional shapes. Module 2 will last for about two and a half weeks.

Growth Mindset

In Room 8, we've started discussing the differences between fixed and growth mindsets. Studies reveal the power of the growth mindset, both in the academic setting, but also as a life skill. Ask your kiddos if they can tell you the difference between the two.

Reading/Interacting with Text

This past week we discussed several strategies for interacting with text. We chatted about why we read, how we read, and where we read. To that discussion, we added the ideas that good readers use their brains when the read, their heads when they read, and their hearts when they read.  We will refer to these as the BHH of reading. Ask your kiddos if they can remember the three questions you should ask yourself when reading with your brain.  For your reference, they are 1) What is this book about? 2) Who is telling the story? and 3) What does the author want you to know?  These questions help our kiddos delve deeper into the books they are reading.  This coming week we will discuss the Head questions.

Hi Families,

Thank you to those parents who attended Back to School Night this past Tuesday. It was a great night, full of important information and a lot of excitement. I've sent out a copy the slide deck to you on email containing all the slides I rushed through in my presentation.  Please let me know if you have any questions after reviewing the slides. Once SchoolLoop has been updated, I'll be posting the slide deck here as well.

I have about 75% of the parent conferences scheduled for Room 8.  I'm awaiting just a few more responses so I can finalize the schedule and confirm your dates. If you desire confirmation of your date/time sooner, please send me an email.

Now that we have finished our technology/digital citizenship lessons, students will begin using their chromebooks in class to support their learning.  Unfortunately, students who did not return their permission slips for these programs will not be able to use them in class.

I have created student accounts for several of our commonly-used programs.  Logins, usernames, and passwords have been printed on labels and will be applied to each student's agenda book, just under their name on the first page.  Please look there should your kiddo forget their logins.

Away we go...

Hello Parents,

The week of August 20th we'll be jumping into 3rd grade content.  In math, we will initially review lessons students received in 2nd grade before exposing them to new content. Over the course of the next two weeks, students will be receiving technology lessons through Common Core Media, which is a district requirement before students are allowed to use their ChromeBooks in class.

Speaking of ChromeBooks; it is imperative I receive the the signed permission slips for technology for each student. For me, these forms seemed more confusing than years past. You received two separate releases, one for Hughes and one for Santa Clara Unified School District. These releases were related, but really served different purposes. The release the District sent will allow our students to use the approved educational programs that have been cleared by the District technology department. Without this signed release, your child may run into problems being able access the programs we use in class.  I'm working with Mr. Young to see if we can somehow simplify this process. In the meantime, if you have not signed an authorization for the educational programs, I urge you to do so soon. If you would like to change your consent, please contact me by email and I'll work on getting a new form sent home to you, either electronically or a paper copy sent home with your child.

     IMPORTANT DATES:

  • August 24 - PTA Dance
  • August 28 - Back to School Night
  • August 30 - Fall Picture Day
  • September 3 - Labor Day (No School)

I'm looking forward to a fun 2nd week of 3rd grade.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Hello Families!

08/16/18

My name is Margie Wysocki and I'm teaching 3rd grade this year. This is the beginning of my 19th year as a public school teacher and my 3rd year at Hughes.

I love Hughes. We have a great staff, a wonderful front office team and we're all excited to work with our new principal, Mr. Young. This year is sure to include new activities and exciting projects and I'm looking forward to spending time with our Hughes community at these events.

When not at school, I enjoy gardening, quilting, and spending time with family and friends. My current passion is quilting and I'm trying to learn from my many mistakes. I never really understood how much linear measurement was involved in this craft. I'm trying to find a way to remove stitches with patience and good humor. When the pattern calls for 1/4" seam - they REALLY mean it!

I'm looking forward to another successful year at Hughes where we will learn together, make mistakes together and come together as a community.
